Nitrofurantoin is activated inside bacteria by reduction via the flavoprotein nitrofurantoin reductase to unstable metabolites, which disrupt ribosomal RNA, DNA and other intracellular components. It is bactericidal, especially to bacteria present in acid urine.

    Do not use in case of:

    • allergic reaction
    • kidney disease
    • urinary problems
    • history of jaundice and liver problems caused by nitrofurantoin
    • last 2 to 4 weeks of pregnancy
    • less than 1 month old child

    Side effects include:

    • watery or bloody diarrhea
    • sudden chest pain, wheezing or dry cough
    • worsening cold
    • lupus like syndrome

    • sulfinpyrazone
    • magnesium containing antacids
