How it works
Potassium ion is the principal intracellular cation of most body tissues. Potassium ions participate in a number of essential physiological processes including the maintenance of intracellular tonicity, the transmission of nerve impulses, the contraction of cardiac, skeletal and smooth muscle, and the maintenance of normal renal function.

Usage And Safety
Dosage
Adults : 2-6 tablets daily in divided doses ; Potassium less than 2.5mEq/day plus additional amounts if needed. Potassium more than 2.4mEq/L : Upto 40-60mEq/day initial dose, followed by further dose based on lab tests. Children : 1-2mEq/kg initially , then as needed based on lab. If not controlled use IV preps. OR As directed by your physician.

Side Effects
The most common adverse reactions to oral potassium salts are nausea, vomiting, flatulence, abdominal pain/discomfort, and diarrhea.

Drug Interactions
Potassium-sparing diuretic, e.g., spironolactone, triamterene, or amiloride ; Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (e.g., captopril, enalapril).

Indication
Potassium depletion especially during diuretic therapy. Edema associated with congestive heart failure, hepatic and renal disease where potassium supplement is required.

When not to Use
It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in this product.

Precautions
Precaution
In patients with impaired mechanisms for excreting potassium, the administration of potassium salts can produce hyperkalemia and cardiac arrest.

Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.

Warning 2
Take each dose without crushing, chewing or sucking the tablets .

Warning 3
Take this medicine following the frequency and amount prescribed by the physician. This is especially important if the patient is also taking diuretics and/or digitalis preparations.
