Meropenem exerts its bactericidal activity by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis in Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Meropenem binds to PBPs 2, 3 and 4 of Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa; and PBPs 1, 2 and 4 of Staphylococcus aureus.
Uses and Indications
Treats severe pneumonia and hospital-acquired lung infections.
Cures complicated urinary tract and intra-abdominal infections.
Manages acute bacterial meningitis and skin infections.
Administration and Dosage
Given via intravenous (IV) injection over 5 minutes or infusion over 15 to 30 minutes.
Standard adult dose is typically 1g every 8 hours depending on the infection type.
Must be mixed with sterile water or approved infusion fluids before use.
Side Effects and Warnings
Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, and rash.
Do not use if allergic to meropenem or other carbapenem/beta-lactam antibiotics.
