How it works
Drotaverine contains as active substance drotaverine hydrochloride. Drotaverine is a derivative of papaverine that possesses antispasmodic activity due to the phosphodiesterase enzyme inhibition in smooth muscles.

Usage And Safety
Dosage
Adults : 1-2 amp slowly by IV 1-3 times daily . Can also be administered intramuscularly and intra-arterially in peripheral arterial disease . Children : Not recommended . OR As directed by your physician .

Side Effects
Gastrointestinal disorders Rare: nausea, constipation. Nervous system disorders Rare: headache, dizziness, insomnia. Not known: dizziness. Cardiac disorders Rare: palpitations, hypotension . Immune system disorders Rare: allergic reaction (local swelling of the skin, hives, rash, itchy skin).

Drug Interactions
Inhibitors of the enzyme phosphodiesterase, such as papaverine and its derivatives , levodopa .

Indication
This medicine is indicated for the treatment of smooth muscle contractions (felt as recurrent stomach pain) in the gastrointestinal tract, gall bladder and urinary tract.

When not to Use
Do not take - If you are allergic to drotaverine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine ; If you have severe kidney, liver or heart failure; If you are breast-feeding. It is contraindicated for children under the age of 1.

Precautions
Precaution
Ask your doctor before you take Drotaverine. Caution is required during administration of Drotaverine to patients with hypotension. Because of the risk of collapse, the drug should be administered intravenously to the lying down patient .

Warnings
Warning 1
Since drotaverine has been associated with acute attacks of porphyria, it is considered unsafe in porphyric patients.

Warning 2
Caution should also be taken for patients with renal or hepatic impairment.

Warning 3
Since drotaverine can cause vertigo (dizziness), caution is advised when driving and using machines.
